"What do you mean, *published*?" Emily demanded, her voice rising in pitch. The publisher on the phone stammered something about a misunderstanding, about interviews she gave… which she didn't remember. Emily felt a rising tide of something noxious, choking her.

She slammed the phone down, the plastic cracking beneath her grip. Her pulse hammered in her ears. She felt a profound and unsettling sense of displacement, as though she'd woken up in someone else's life. The words on the printed page swam before her vision.

She wrapped her arms around herself, attempting to still the tremors that wracked her body. She needed to go somewhere, but going anywhere felt impossible. She felt stuck.
