The shop's atmosphere settled upon her like a shroud, stifling. The harsh lighting seemed to highlight the decay of the place, the wear and tear on the objects, the weight of the past. Chloe felt a tremor run through her, a wave of cold that originated in her stomach and spread outwards. The silence felt oppressive, the weight of a thousand untold stories pressing in.

She walked slowly, carefully, cataloguing the shop’s contents, trying to make sense of the jumble.

Then she saw it. Nestled among a collection of cheap watches, its beauty somehow undiminished. Her grandmother’s ring, shimmering. She felt a sudden, inexplicable urge to flee, to escape this place. But her feet remained rooted to the spot.
