The pool water looked like a vast, unforgiving surface. “You’re on freestyle, Liam.” Liam, a backstroker, felt his throat close up. He hated freestyle. He hated the open water, the relentless pace, the feeling of vulnerability.

He took his position on the blocks, his body rigid. The other swimmers seemed like sleek, predatory creatures. He felt his pulse hammering in his temples.

He heard the gunshot and dove, his body hitting the water with a splash. The first few strokes were clumsy. Each breath was a struggle. He was falling behind.
