He’d almost made it through the ceremony without incident. Mark, however, had the foresight to position himself near the bar. The reception, however, was a different beast. The string quartet, the carefully chosen flowers, the smiling faces – they all seemed to close in, compressing him. He hated these sorts of events.

He spotted her across the room, talking animatedly with someone he didn't recognise. His stomach clenched. He picked at the corner of a canape, the bland taste doing nothing to soothe the sudden dryness in his mouth.

He knew he should turn away, walk in the opposite direction, but his feet felt stuck to the floor. The music seemed to amplify the internal pressure building inside him. The world narrowed to just her and him.
