The mountain of paperwork in her new role at the legal department loomed, a physical manifestation of her anxieties. Maria found herself staring at the files, unable to bring herself to open the first one. She sat at her new desk, a cold, sterile space, feeling a strange disconnect from her body.

Each file seemed to be a door to a complicated maze, and she felt paralyzed. Her head throbbed, and her vision blurred slightly. She couldn’t seem to process the text.

The aroma of her coworkers' lunches mixed with the stale office air made her nauseous. Taking a deep breath, she picked up her pen and attempted to begin. The tip of the pen never touched the paper. She put it down again. This was a nightmare.
