He stared at the card, his jaw clenched. The edges of the paper blurred with the moisture in his eyes. He hadn't slept properly in days. The silence of the street seemed to amplify the internal cacophony in his head.

The thought of opening the card filled him with a potent sense of dread. It represented another connection, another expectation. The feeling was a physical thing, something he could feel pressing on his lungs.
