The phone slipped from her grasp, clattering onto the hardwood floor. The screen shattered, mirroring the internal fracture that had just occurred. Her gaze drifted out the window, at the vibrant green of the trees, and the blue sky, as if searching for something familiar, something stable, in a world that had suddenly become unstable.

A wave of nausea churned in her stomach. She felt as though she might be sick at any moment. She sank to the floor, her back against the cool wall. She felt a profound sense of loss, a void opening up inside her, a chilling space where her foundation had once resided.

The silence of the room amplified the frantic beating of her heart. She wrapped her arms around herself, as if trying to hold herself together, to prevent herself from completely falling apart.
