He stared at the words, the harshness of the message hitting him like a blow. His jaw clenched, and his hands balled into fists. The world narrowed, focusing on the screen, on the immutable information. He felt a sudden, fierce heat rising in his chest, a burning sensation that spread through his limbs.

He slammed his hand on the desk, the sound echoing in the silent room. He stood up, knocking over the chair, the gesture expressing the fury he was fighting to contain. He felt as though every breath was being fought for, as though he was slowly being consumed.

He grabbed his car keys and walked out of the house, wanting to drive far, far away from all the questions that would soon begin.
