The car was packed. Everything was ready. Yet, David couldn't move. He sat at the kitchen table, staring at the empty spaces where his family had once gathered. His throat felt constricted, making it hard to swallow. The air was thick with the ghost of laughter, a symphony of echoes that now mocked his silence.

He picked up a chipped mug, his mother's favorite, and ran his thumb over the faded floral pattern. He closed his eyes, remembering the scent of her coffee, the warmth of her presence. The thought of never being able to sit here again, in this particular space, paralyzed him.

He pushed back from the table, the chair scraping loudly against the floor. Every movement felt like a monumental effort. He knew he had to go. He knew it was over. But he couldn't.
