The air in the bedroom was thick, heavy. Maria’s breath came in shallow, rapid pants. Her son, Alex, had created a meme account. Sarcastic, edgy, and, worst of all, filled with veiled references to things she didn’t want to know.

Her hands were shaking. She couldn’t keep the tears from spilling. She felt so vulnerable, so exposed. The feeling was a sharp, stinging sensation in her chest.

She felt trapped. She needed to escape. To run far, far away. She pushed herself away from the bed, the blankets tangled and heavy. Every breath felt like a monumental effort. How could she possibly address this breach of trust?
