The bus roared, a metal beast swallowing the city. Leo gripped the pole so tight his knuckles ached. His stomach churned with a mixture of dread and something akin to a profound sadness. He'd waited outside her office for hours, watching. Then, she walked out. This was a mistake.

He called her name, and she turned. His voice, hoarse with disuse, barely reached her. He blurted out their shared history, their inside jokes, their embarrassing childhood escapades.

She tilted her head. Her face, devoid of recognition, was a total stranger. "I am sorry, I am afraid you have the wrong person." The words seemed to echo in his skull, each syllable a blow. He wanted to scream.
