The hum of the server room, usually a background comfort, now grated on Mark’s nerves. He felt a sudden, sharp pain behind his eyes. He'd spent the last year building the data infrastructure, pouring countless hours into the project. All for what?

He ran a hand over his face. The announcement had hit him like a physical blow. He felt a need to pace. He walked, back and forth, from the door of the room to the computers, and then back. His shoulders felt tight, his muscles rigid.
