Rain lashed against the attic window, mirroring the chaotic churn inside Amelia. Papers cascaded from the cardboard box, a landslide of forgotten memories. She’d promised herself she’d tackle the clutter, but the weight of it, the sheer *volume* of it, pressed down on her chest. A handwritten letter, yellowed and creased, caught her eye. It was her mother’s handwriting, a familiar script that usually brought comfort. This time, though, it felt like a blow. It was a draft resignation letter from her mother's high-powered legal job, dated 1983. Amelia’s throat constricted. She hadn't known her mother had *ever* considered leaving her career.
