The phone rang again. It had been ringing non-stop since the storm. Sarah stared at the screen, another unknown number. She let it go to voicemail. The sight of the splintered birch, its roots torn from the earth, made her stomach churn. It was a disaster, a messy, noisy disaster.

She rubbed her temples, the dull ache intensifying with each unanswered call. There were forms to fill out, contractors to contact, and a whole host of questions. The weight of it pressed down on her chest, making it hard to breathe.

Her apartment felt small, the walls closing in. She needed space, air, a moment's peace.
