Rain lashed against the windows, blurring the cityscape outside. Liam poured himself a stiff drink, the amber liquid sloshing over the rim of the glass. The bitter taste did little to soothe the turmoil raging within him. He sat at the kitchen table, the laptop open in front of him, the bank statements displayed like a damning indictment. He'd been looking into their retirement plan. He found something else.

The numbers swam before his eyes. He felt a profound sense of bewilderment. He tossed back the drink, the harshness burning a path down his throat. The world seemed to tilt on its axis. He couldn’t breathe. He struggled to find any ground under his feet.
