He slammed the door, the sound echoing in his small apartment, the noise bouncing off the walls. The bass from the speakers upstairs was vibrating through the floorboards. David ran a hand through his hair, his fingers snagging. He felt a desperate urge to tear something, anything.

The email from the landlord pinged in his mind. The incessant noise. The complaints from the other tenants. He sat heavily on the edge of his bed, the springs groaning in protest. He just needed to be left alone, left to breathe.

He imagined the confrontation. The upstairs neighbor, that smug look on his face. The thinly veiled accusations. He buried his face in his hands, pressing hard. The throbbing in his temples threatened to split his skull. He couldn't deal with it. Not today.
