The air conditioning hummed, a futile attempt to cool the stifling heat of the office. Emily stared at her computer screen, the spreadsheets blurring before her eyes. The annual review was next week, and the numbers weren’t adding up. Across the street, the Millers were renovating their penthouse, adding a whole extra floor.

She pushed herself back from her desk, the chair screeching on the floor. Her hands were clammy. She needed to take a break.

Her head swam with thoughts and calculations. She stood up. She needed to go outside.
