He’d known he was in trouble. The professor’s expression, the way he’d paused before handing back the history papers… It had been a premonition. But the "D" still sucker punched him. He blinked, the words blurring before his eyes. A wave of nausea rolled through him. He felt the blood drain from his face.

He pushed his chair back, the screech echoing in the lecture hall. He wanted to flee, to disappear. He clutched his chest, trying to take a deep breath. His throat felt constricted. He needed to get out, to somewhere quiet. He mumbled a hurried excuse to a classmate and bolted.
