The phone rang just as David was about to put his feet up after a long day. It was his neighbor, Mr. Harrison. “David, I was thinking… the back corner of your yard gets such good sun. I was hoping…”

David sighed, his shoulders slumping. He had just finished a grueling project at work. The thought of adding another obligation, another layer to his responsibilities, made his head spin. He hated disappointing people, but he felt unable to agree to anything.

He rubbed his temples, a dull ache throbbing behind his eyes. He said something about being busy, about needing to think about it. He disconnected the call quickly, and tossed the phone onto the sofa. Then he sat there, staring at the ceiling, feeling a profound sense of exhaustion.
