"Well, this is just great," Maya muttered, her voice brittle. She crumpled the paper and tossed it onto the overflowing pile of mail. A tight knot formed in her stomach. The idea of moving, of facing the future, felt like stepping off a cliff.

She sat on the sofa, her gaze drifting around the room. Her eyes lingered on her well-worn furniture, the familiar objects that had witnessed years of her life. The thought of leaving it all behind, of severing her connection to this space, caused a wave of sadness to wash over her.

She closed her eyes, trying to block out the churning in her gut. Everything felt too loud, too bright, too much. A single tear escaped, tracing a path down her cheek.
