The news felt like a physical blow. James felt the air leave his lungs. He sat down heavily on the edge of his bed, his legs suddenly weak. His apartment, once a sanctuary, now seemed like a ticking time bomb.

He glanced at the calendar on his desk, the dates blurring together in a dizzying array. He thought about the packing, the cleaning, the daunting task of finding a new place. Each prospect he conjured up felt like a threat.

He got up and started aimlessly wandering around the apartment, touching things, as though memorizing them before they were gone. A sense of helplessness washed over him.
