The world tilted on its axis the moment the demo began. Emily squeezed her eyes shut, and her breath hitched. She clutched the edge of her kitchen counter, her knuckles white, willing the floor not to shake. Her carefully planned schedule for the day evaporated.

“Hello?” she croaked, her voice barely a whisper, as she heard the first scream of a power saw. She peeked outside. The sunny day seemed to have lost its luster.

She grabbed her phone and desperately messaged her therapist, fingers fumbling over the keyboard. She could feel her stomach twist into knots, a sensation that had been building for days, ever since the first talk of the remodel project. She could not handle this.
