Gemotions

The aroma of coffee, usually comforting, felt cloying in her nostrils. Alice, her mind racing, took a large gulp, the hot liquid burning her tongue. She was waiting by the door, constantly glancing at the mailbox, as if willing the postman to appear. Both she and Mark knew they were neck and neck.

She couldn’t eat, couldn’t concentrate. The apartment, once a haven, now felt like a cage. She kept reliving every detail of the interview, every mistake, every missed opportunity.

She finally gave in to the urge to pace, her footsteps echoing in the silence. It was like a black hole, she thought, and she was falling into it.
