John sat on the edge of his bed, frozen. It was supposed to be a good thing, a chance, a way out of his current situation. Now, the potential success was marred by the knowledge that Kevin also wanted the very same thing.

He felt as though his chest was being squeezed, his lungs struggling to expand. He had meticulously crafted his resume, practiced his answers. It made no difference. He felt as though it was all for naught.

He stared at his phone, a dark, rectangular abyss. He was suddenly aware of every creak in the old house, every distant siren, every tiny, insignificant sound that pierced the heavy silence. His breath came fast, shallow, and quick.
