Gemotions

The fluorescent lights of the office seemed to buzz louder than usual. Sarah felt a tightness in her chest, a physical sensation of being constricted. The job offer was the only thing that could save her from her financial woes. Then the email arrived, and she knew her best friend, Emily, was up against her for it.

She felt a hot flush creep up her neck, staining her cheeks. She found herself repeatedly touching her neck, as if to gauge the temperature. She imagined the look on Emily's face, the smile, the excitement. The thought was unbearable.

She pushed her chair back from the desk, unable to sit any longer. She needed air, needed to get away, even if only for a few minutes. She headed for the elevator, her steps rapid and almost unsteady.
