The weight in Mark's chest made it hard to breathe. He had volunteered to go through his uncle's old study. He’d expected to find books, perhaps some forgotten letters. Instead, he discovered a collection of meticulously organized files, each one bearing his name and the date. He felt a creeping disquiet.

He opened a folder and felt his breath catch. It was a collection of his report cards, each one marked with his uncle's meticulous notes. Mark remembered feeling judged by his uncle. He now felt it again. His face was hot.

Mark backed away from the desk, his legs shaky. He needed to get away, to escape this suffocating room. He turned and stumbled toward the door.
