David crumpled the invitation in his fist, the paper hissing with the effort. He took a deep breath, trying to steady his shaking hands. The color drained from his face.

He retreated to the bathroom, splashing cold water on his face, but it didn't help. He stared at his reflection, seeing the same lines of worry he'd carried since high school. The same fear.

He wanted to scream, to run. His pulse raced. He imagined the judgmental looks, the pitying smiles. He slammed his fist against the sink, the impact a jarring release of pent-up tension. He knew he couldn't face them. He just knew it.
