The notification popped up on Liam's phone: “Your DNA results are ready.” He flinched, as if physically struck. He had been so sure, so certain of his roots. Now, he was adrift in a sea of unknown possibilities.

He ran a hand through his hair, the gesture more frantic than calming. The air in his small apartment seemed heavy, thick. He couldn’t seem to catch his breath. He had to get out.

He threw on a jacket and headed for the door, not sure where he was going, only knowing he had to move, to escape the crushing weight of the revelation. His steps quickened as he walked, his thoughts a chaotic jumble.
