The air in the sterile lab felt suddenly thin and brittle to Samuel. The screen displayed the damning message, the official letter confirming the impossible truth. He squeezed his eyes shut for a moment. He hadn’t noticed the time passing, focused on his research. It now felt irrelevant. A mistake. His scholarship, his dream, was a phantom, and everything felt as if it were collapsing in on him.

He felt a deep chill creep through his bones. His carefully laid plans, the years of hard work, the sacrifices, all seemed to have evaporated. He stood up abruptly, knocking over his chair.

His hands shook as he reached for his lab coat, his movements jerky and uncoordinated. He needed to get out. He couldn’t be here, in this suffocating atmosphere, surrounded by reminders of his failure.

He grabbed his bag and, without a backward glance, fled from the lab, the echoing sound of his footsteps the only accompaniment to his desperate flight.
