He felt his pulse quicken as Martha told him her plans. A tight knot formed in his stomach. He blinked rapidly, trying to clear the sudden fog in his vision. The cafe’s cheerful music grated on his nerves. He started to tap his fingers on the table, a frantic rhythm. He found himself scanning the room, as if searching for an exit.

He felt the familiar comfort of the familiar space suddenly turn hostile. The faces of the people around them seemed to blur. He felt a desperate urge to argue, to convince her to change her mind.
