The news landed on Emily like a physical blow. She stood frozen, the half-eaten sandwich clutched limply in her hand. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the silence. Across the park bench, Sam was happily describing his new adventure. Her smile felt like a mask, strained and unnatural.

She couldn’t swallow, couldn't speak. The air felt thick, heavy, making it difficult to breathe. She slowly lowered herself back onto the bench, her legs suddenly weak. Everything felt distant, muted. She looked at the colorful leaves on the trees, but they appeared blurred, as if through a veil of tears she didn't realize she was shedding.
