The phone slipped from her grasp, crashing onto the wooden floor. The sound was deafening in the suddenly quiet apartment. Amy stared at the cracked screen, the pieces of it somehow representative of a greater loss. Her breath hitched. A cold wave washed over her, chilling her to the bone.

The world seemed to tilt on its axis. She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to block out the image of her best friend, leaving, gone. She stumbled towards the sofa, collapsing onto it. The silence of the apartment felt deafening now. Her whole body shook with the realization of what was to come.
