“Do you know what this is?” The detective held up a crumpled piece of paper, a faded photograph taped to it. Liam recognized the handwriting instantly. His vision swam. He gripped the edge of the interrogation table, his knuckles white.

His throat constricted, making it difficult to swallow. The questions started again, relentless and probing, each word a fresh wound. The room felt like it was closing in around him. He struggled to breathe, the air thick and heavy. He wanted to scream, to lash out, to disappear.
