The computer screen flickered, and the images seemed to mock Ethan. He felt a creeping coldness in his extremities. His legs felt weak, and he slumped against the back of his chair. He hated this, every single facet of the situation.

He reread the listing, the flowery prose grating on his nerves. "Move-in ready," it proclaimed, as if a lifetime of memories could simply be packed away. It was a lie.

He closed the browser, the screen going black. He felt an urge to scream. But his throat closed up, and the words wouldn’t come.

He buried his face in his hands.
