"Chapter 12: The Breakdown," the title read. Sarah’s stomach lurched, the contents threatened to spill upward. She reread the opening paragraph, about her disastrous attempt at baking a cake, the exact disaster she'd described to Michael last week. Every detail was there, even the flour dusting her cheeks. She felt a burning sensation in her eyes.

She quickly slammed the laptop shut. Her heart slammed against her ribs. She felt a sudden urge to flee. She paced the living room, her movements restless and uncontrolled, like a wild beast trapped.

She didn't know what to do. She had to find some semblance of calm. She rushed to the bathroom, splashing cold water on her face, trying to wash away the feeling of violation. The cool water offered only temporary relief. She felt a powerful tremor in her limbs.
