He had been so careful. So very, very careful, or so she had thought. Now, staring at the pages, the story of "Eleanor" felt like a knife twisting. Her own life, dissected and rearranged, rendered almost unrecognizable yet achingly familiar.

Her throat constricted. She struggled to swallow, as if something were lodged in her throat. She gripped the edge of the desk, her knuckles white. She had to understand. She had to know.

She opened her mouth, but no sound came out. She was completely unable to speak, her vocal cords seized. Her whole body trembled. The betrayal was a weight, pressing down on her, stealing her breath. She picked up her phone, ready to confront him, but her hands shook so badly she could barely hold it.
