The discovery was made during a city clean-up, and she was assigned to document it. The metal box, dented and weathered, sat on the table before her, radiating an aura of the unknown. Her skin prickled. A sense of wrongness coiled in her stomach. She’d spent her life chronicling the past, but this felt different, more personal. A dark, hollow dread consumed her.

She touched it, her fingertips grazing the cold metal. The air in the room felt thick, oppressive, as if the very walls were closing in. Her pulse quickened. She felt a need to leave.
