The air conditioning blasted cold, icy air onto Ben's exposed neck. He shivered, pulling his sweater tighter, even though the temperature was perfectly reasonable. His new trainer, Maria, watched him, her expression an enigma. Every time he spoke, he was aware of his rapid heartbeat, as if his chest might explode.

He pointed to the screen, explaining the intricacies of the sales software. He felt the sweat prickle on his forehead, his palms slick. He kept repeating himself, clarifying steps even when he knew she understood. Was she deliberately trying to trip him up? He paused, catching her eye, convinced she could read the anxiety plain on his face.

"Are you sure you understand this part?" he asked, his voice strained. He needed to be thorough, but he also wanted to avoid any perceived incompetence that might lead to an earlier dismissal.
