Gemotions

The office building loomed over Susan like a cold, gray monolith. She felt as though the very walls were closing in as she walked her replacement, Mark, through the filing system. Each file, each document, felt like a potential weapon, a tool he could use to expose her weaknesses, her flaws.

She stopped abruptly, feigning a sudden need to check her emails. Her fingers trembled as she typed, the cursor a blinking sentinel. The back of her neck burned, as if watched. She glanced at Mark, but he was looking at the files.

"The important thing is attention to detail," she finally blurted out. The words sounded hollow, empty even to her own ears. She felt a sharp, stabbing sensation in her stomach.
