The best man’s toast made him feel sick. Every word, every shared memory, felt like a deliberate taunt. He wondered if Sarah knew. He scanned the room, searching for her, for a sign. A signal.

He kept his distance from the bride and groom. He didn’t want them to see the turmoil he felt. He thought everyone would think he was a monster. He felt everyone was judging him.

He took another shot. It did nothing to calm the tremors in his hands. He wished he'd never come. He wished he could just vanish. The music got louder.
