She felt her stomach clench with each polite greeting, each forced smile. She chose a seat at the back, close to the exit, a safe distance from the central vortex of the party. The cheerful chatter of the wedding guests was a wall of noise, each voice a potential threat.

She watched the door, her heart skipping a beat every time someone entered. She could feel every nerve ending thrumming. The floral centerpieces became a distraction. The band started playing. She didn't like the band.

She found herself analyzing every interaction, searching for any sign, any clue of his presence. She felt that the servers were staring at her, whispering and pointing. She looked over her shoulder and saw nothing.
