The PTA meeting was supposed to be a breeze, a quick in-and-out. But the moment Mrs. Gable’s name was mentioned as the new fifth-grade teacher, a knot tightened in his stomach. He excused himself to the restroom, splashing cold water on his face, trying to shake the feeling. His own fifth grade… the memories, like unwelcome guests, began to flood back. He’d done things he regretted back then, petty things, things Mrs. Gable had seen. He had a sudden urge to pull his son from the school. He felt like his past was about to catch up to him.
