The request was an unwelcome surprise. Maria stiffened. It was from David, the boy who had constantly made fun of her weight in high school. Her jaw clenched. She felt a sudden need to flee, to disappear.

She grabbed her keys and rushed outside to her car, not bothering to put on a coat. She drove around aimlessly, trying to outrun the feeling of dread. Each passing car felt like a threat, a potential ambush. She checked her rearview mirror constantly.

She felt a hot flush creep up her neck.
