He found the box tucked away in the furthest corner. It was a shoebox, covered in faded floral wallpaper. David hesitated, his hand trembling as he reached for it. He didn’t want to know. He didn’t want to open it.

He sat on the attic floor, the box on his lap. He finally pulled the lid off. Inside, a collection of old letters, tied with a ribbon. He forced himself to read one, then another. Each word seemed to be directed at him, a veiled message. The handwriting, elegant and flowing, seemed to watch him.

He slammed the lid closed, his chest tight. He felt the hair on the back of his neck prickle. He felt as if someone was in the house with him. He quickly went through every room, every corner, every cupboard, making sure he was alone. The wind rattling the window panes sounded like someone tapping.
