He hadn't slept in two days. The walls seemed to be closing in. Every shadow in his apartment held a threat. He drank too much coffee, smoked too many cigarettes, but neither helped calm the churning in his gut.

He read the newspaper, obsessively searching for clues. Any article about crime, any mention of a lost wallet, sent his heart racing. He felt the air grow heavy as if it contained a secret.

He tried to go outside, but the light was too intense. He ducked back inside, and locked the door. He was trapped, utterly alone in a world suddenly filled with danger.
