Gemotions

The embossed invitation felt heavy in Daniel's hand, almost a physical weight. He read it again, the gold lettering mocking him from the crisp cardstock: "Northwood High School, Class of '04, Twenty Year Reunion." His breath hitched. He wasn't sure why he'd even opened it. He’d known, of course, that it was coming. Still, here it was, a tangible threat.

His gaze flicked around his apartment. Had he locked the front door? He couldn't remember. He walked over to check, peering through the peephole. Nothing. He double-bolted it anyway, just to be safe.

He tossed the invitation onto the kitchen counter, then found himself pacing, arms crossed over his chest. His heart was hammering a frantic rhythm against his ribs. What if they knew? What if they'd figured it out?
