The air crackled with a silent tension. He felt pinned, trapped. He saw conspiracies everywhere. He distrusted every friendly face, every fleeting glance. Everyone knew. They were all in on it.

He crouched by the window, watching the demolition crew assemble their tools. Their laughter grated on his nerves. He was certain they were mocking him. He clutched his chest, gasping for air.
