The campus security guard smiled at her, and she nearly jumped out of her skin. He was just doing his job, she knew. She knew the gesture meant nothing, but still, she felt a chill.

She started seeing the world through a lens of suspicion. It seemed as if everywhere she went, people were looking at her, judging her, whispering about her.

She skipped classes. She started avoiding any place she’d have to interact with others. Her dorm room became her sanctuary, a fortress against the outside world.
