He stared at the blank screen of his laptop, the cursor blinking like a malevolent eye. He was supposed to be working, but his thoughts kept returning to the incident at the bookstore. He'd bumped into her, the woman who looked exactly like his childhood friend, Lisa. Her dismissive "I'm sorry, you must be mistaken" had thrown him.

He slammed his fist on the desk. He felt a tightening in his chest, a sensation of being watched. He closed all the online windows, unplugged the internet. He considered everything they had ever done as children, and how that could be erased. He leaned back in his chair, trying to breathe, but the air felt thin. Something had changed. He could feel it.
