He sat on the porch, a cold cup of coffee in his hand, watching the world go by. The sun was setting, casting long, distorted shadows that seemed to dance and twist. He felt uneasy, unsettled by the encounter with Ashley. The look of blankness in her eyes when she denied any memory of their shared past had left him rattled.

He hadn't been sleeping well since. Every creak of the house, every hoot of an owl, sent a jolt of anxiety through him. He checked the locks on the doors, the windows. Twice. He felt the phantom touch of a hand on his shoulder. He swallowed hard. The world felt dangerous. He decided to stay indoors.
